Partners

The Doornkop Community has been on their journey towards sustainability for quite some time, however ICLEI Africa and Steve Tshwete Local Municipality have come on board as partners to provide assistance through the Urban LEDS Programme.

Steve Tshwete Local Municipality:

The best community driven Local Municipality on provision of sustainable services and stevetshwetedevelopmental programmes. The municipality has become known as the ‘greenest municipality’ in Mpumalanga over the last few years, as recognised by Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA) through the Greenest Municipality Competition.  This addresses issues as energy efficiency, waste reduction and water conservation.  They are also a Model City in the Urban LEDS Programme in an effort to transition towards a low carbon economy.

ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability:

ICLEI is a global association of more than 1200 member cities, local authorities and their associations, which convenes the largest coordinated local climate action in the world. ICLEI Logo_high res_JPEGThis is done through programmes such as Cities for Climate Protection (CCP) and the Local Renewables Initiative. Examples of ICLEI’s global representation include that of designated focal points for Local Government and Municipality Associations (LGMA) to the UNFCCC, first Local Government Network Observer of the International Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and Local Government Major Group convener to the United Nations Commission for Sustainable Development (UN CSD).

Urban Low Emission Development Strategies:

The Urban-LEDS (low emission development strategies) project, funded by the European Commission, and implemented by UN-Habitat and ICLEI, has the Urban LEDS Logo Square_400x400objective of enhancing the transition to low emission urban development in emerging economy countries. It supports selected local governments in Brazil, India, Indonesia and South Africa with a comprehensive methodological framework, known as the Green Climate Cities methodology, to integrate low-carbon strategies into all sectors of urban planning and development within their municipalities.

The project was launched in South Africa in February 2013 and the seven participating cities have been working with the Urban-LEDS team to compile baseline reports, participate in training workshops, develop strategies and implement projects. http://urbanleds.iclei.org/

The project is assisting the Doornkop community on their journey towards generating practical renewable energy solutions and building local capacity.
